For more than 20 years, Eye Care Plus Camden has been helping local people see more clearly, while building the kind of personal connections that come with being part of a long-standing independent business.
Located in the familiar Whiteman’s Arcade, the practice has become a well-known part of Camden’s town centre. Optometrist Lisa joined the team at the beginning of last year and says one of the things she values most is the opportunity to get to know patients and be part of the local community.
“I love the community in Camden,” Lisa says. “The people are very friendly and lovely. The patients always have time to tell a joke, tell a story, so we love that.”
Lisa has been working as an optometrist for almost seven years, following five years of study that included placements across Australia and overseas, including time working with eye specialists in New York and New Jersey.
For her, one of the most rewarding parts of optometry is seeing the difference clear vision can make to someone’s everyday life.
Some people, particularly children, may not realise their vision is blurred because it is all they have ever known. Lisa says seeing their reaction when they put on the right pair of glasses for the first time can be incredibly rewarding.
But the work at Eye Care Plus Camden goes well beyond prescribing glasses.
The team also focuses strongly on eye health, using a range of equipment and scanning technology to examine the back of the eye and help detect and monitor conditions including glaucoma and macular degeneration.
The practice has also recently invested in new equipment that allows the team to work closely with local eye specialists and assist with the ongoing management of certain eye conditions.
For Lisa, being part of an independent practice means having the time to understand each patient’s individual needs.
“We get to know the patient and see what problems they’re having with their daily activities and their sight,” she says.
That community connection also extends beyond the consulting room. Eye Care Plus Camden supports initiatives such as Daffodil Day, raising funds for the Cancer Council and helping support cancer research, prevention programs and services.
During its Daffodil Day activities, the practice welcomed members of the local community to stop by for a morning tea, a conversation and a cupcake while supporting an important cause.
After more than two decades in Camden, Eye Care Plus continues to combine modern eye care with the personal service of a local independent business.
For Lisa, being surrounded by familiar faces, neighbouring businesses and the history of Whiteman’s Arcade is all part of what makes working in Camden special.
