There is something special about hearing local stories told by local people — and that is exactly what community radio does best.
Recently, Spirit of Camden’s Melissa Musgrave joined Lena in the studio at Sounds of Macarthur 100.3FM, our local community radio station, to talk about what is happening across Camden Village as spring gets underway.

From heritage celebrations and live music to painted shopfronts, community events and the continuing growth of the Camden Village website, September is shaping up to be a lively month in the heart of Camden.
A Taste of SPINOUT at Unlock Camden
One of the first stops on the September calendar is Camden Council’s Unlock Camden Heritage Festival, where Spirit of Camden will bring a little rock ’n’ roll energy to John Street.
Behind the Dessert Lab, visitors will find classic cars, a black-and-white dance floor, dancers from Big Al’s Rock & Roll and live music from young local rock ’n’ roll band Denim Rose.
The activation is also a preview of what is to come when SPINOUT Rock & Roll Festival returns to Camden from 19–21 February 2027.
For Spirit of Camden, events like this are not only about entertainment. They are another way of encouraging people to spend time in the township, explore local businesses and experience Camden in a different way.
Bringing Spring to the Main Street
Visitors to Argyle Street may also notice a little extra colour appearing in the windows.
Following the success of last year’s spring window painting project, local artists will again be transforming selected shopfronts with seasonal artwork.
It is a simple idea, but one that adds personality to the streetscape and encourages people to slow down, walk the main street and take another look at the businesses around them.
A Digital Home for Camden Village
A major part of Spirit of Camden’s work over the past year has been the development of camdenvillage.com.au — an online space designed to bring together the people, places and experiences of the township.
The website includes local businesses and community organisations, upcoming events, stories about Camden and an itinerary planner that allows visitors to build their own day out.
Whether you are a local looking for something to do on the weekend or a visitor deciding how to spend a day in Camden, the aim is to make discovering the Village easier.
Those who subscribe to the website during the spring promotion will also have the chance to win a stay at the renovated Camden Hotel suites.
Why “Camden Village”?
During the radio conversation, Melissa also touched on the story behind the name Camden Village.
While Camden is certainly a town, the word village reflects something more than geography.
It speaks to the feeling of Camden — its heritage streets, independent businesses, familiar faces and the sense that people still stop and talk to one another.
There is some history behind the name too. An early surveyor’s map from the 1830s referred to the area as the Village of Camden, making today’s name something of a nod to the township’s past.
Most importantly, Camden Village helps distinguish the historic township from the much larger Camden Local Government Area that surrounds it.
Plenty More to Discover
Unlock Camden is only the beginning of a busy September.
Spirit of Camden will also be out in the community at Carrington Fair and the Camden Volunteer Expo, while other major local events including Taste of Camden and the Camden Park House Open Weekend will give people even more reasons to explore the area.

Shop in the main street. Discover a business you have never visited. Attend a local event. Learn a little more about Camden’s history.
