Spirit of Camden was proud to represent Camden Village at the NSW 24-Hour Economy Commissioner's Open 'Mike' Night held in Canley Vale on Monday 22 June.
Hosted across two popular Canley Vale venues, Lang An and Bar 53, the event brought together government, business, community leaders and cultural representatives from across Western Sydney to celebrate the region's growing visitor economy and vibrant night-time experiences.
The evening was organised by the 24 Hour Economy and Little Asia District, a fellow Uptown District that participated alongside Camden Village in the NSW Government's Uptown Program in 2024. The event highlighted the success of place-based initiatives that are helping local communities create unique visitor experiences and strengthen local economies.
Guests gathered at Lang An for pre-event networking, where they enjoyed a selection of Asian-inspired cuisine while experiencing live entertainment from emerging artist RIAH and a colourful lion dance performance. The traditional lion dancers then led attendees on a short walk to Bar 53, creating an energetic and memorable transition between venues.
Following a Welcome to Country by Uncle Tony, NSW 24-Hour Economy Commissioner Michael Rodrigues opened the formal proceedings, speaking about the importance of vibrant districts and the role local communities play in shaping Western Sydney's future.
The event featured a discussion with David Borger, Executive Director of Business Western Sydney, and Lisa Havilah, Chief Executive of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (Powerhouse Museum), exploring the opportunities being created through major projects including the new Powerhouse Parramatta, Sydney Metro and Western Sydney International Airport.
Before the panel discussion, attendees were treated to a visual showcase of both the Little Asia District and Camden Village, including highlights from Camden's inaugural SPINOUT Rock and Roll Festival.
Representing Camden Village, District Coordinator Melissa Musgrave joined Commissioner Rodrigues on stage to discuss the unique character of Camden and the factors driving the district's growth and success.
Melissa spoke about Camden's distinctive blend of heritage, community spirit and new energy, and how those elements influence the way Camden Village develops events, experiences and programming. She also highlighted the emerging culture of collaboration that exists across local businesses and community organisations, helping create authentic experiences that reflect the character of the town.
A video presentation of the SPINOUT Rock and Roll Festival was then shown to the audience, showcasing how the event activated multiple venues, brought thousands of visitors into the district and demonstrated Camden's ability to deliver destination experiences that celebrate local culture and community.
The presentation also highlighted the launch of Camden Village's digital platform, CamdenVillage.com.au, which connects visitors with local businesses, events, attractions and stories from across the district.
Joining the discussion were Anthony Nguyen from the Little Asia District and Councillor Kevin Lam from Fairfield City Council, who shared insights into the success of Canley Vale's cultural and economic initiatives.
The evening concluded with an address from the Hon. John Graham MLC, Minister for 24 Hour Economy, followed by further networking opportunities between representatives from local government, business, community organisations and district programs from across the region.
For Spirit of Camden, the evening was a valuable opportunity to share the Camden Village story, celebrate the success of local initiatives such as SPINOUT, and strengthen connections with leaders who are helping shape the future of Western Sydney.
Most importantly, it reinforced the growing recognition that authentic local community-led groups like Camden Village play an important role in creating vibrant communities, supporting local businesses and contributing to a thriving 24-hour economy.
